472. Ideas on how to find your own pioneer ancestors, and which Wagon Trail group they came with.

Today, being July 24th, we think of our pioneer ancestors.  Also there are many who are as a pioneer to their own family, being the first to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  I have spent time this morning reading stories of some ancestors which have been submitted to Family Search, on Family Tree.  If any of you have not registered so you can access Family Tree, I encourage you to go to www.familysearch.org, and register.  If you are a member, you need the last 5 numbers of your current Temple recommend which is the last 5 numbers of your membership.  Or if you don't have that you can get your membership number from your ward clerk.  If you are not a member, you can sign on without that, but you will not be able to get some of the benefits the Church has made with different groups, such as free access to Ancestry.com, and other genealogical sites.

After you have signed on, in looking at your own private family tree, click on any ancestor of yours, and go to their private information.  There you can see the photos and documents, and life stories that someone has entered for them.  If you have those for some ancestors, it would be great to submit them yourself.  I have submitted numerous photos and documents, and life stories.  But today I read some life stories of some ancestors that others have submitted, and they were most fascinating.  They told many things about their lives that we didn't know, and didn't have access to their stories.  What a treasure trove of family information!  I'm excited to read more, and submit more.  It is our legacy to those who come after us.

HAPPY 24TH OF JULY ---- HAPPY PIONEER DAY!  I HAVE PUT MANY PIONEER STORIES ON THIS BLOG, WHICH YOU CAN FIND UNDER THEIR NAMES.  The information below tells how to find your own pioneers.

Church Members Can Now Connect to Unknown Ancestors Like Never Before

Church members can now connect to previously unknown Mormon Pioneers in a whole new way through the newly redesigned Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel website. In addition to allowing Church members to discover their pioneer ancestry, the website now provides ways for people to read their ancestors’ journals, view their photos, read humorous stories and other interesting articles, and learn about major events in their ancestors lives.

This site offers a fun way for kids to see and experience family history, helping the whole family grow together as you gain more insight into the lives of your ancestors.

The Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel website now includes information about more than 57,000 pioneers and 370 pioneer companies.

“This is an extremely significant database,” said Keith Erekson, Church History Library Director. “It reveals so much about individual pioneers and their experiences, but it also offers fresh new insights about their collective experience.”

Featured in the Church's new "I Am a Pioneer" campaign, the new features will help bring history to life and inspire millions through the courage, faith, triumph, and sacrifice of those who crossed the plains.
To access the site and these new features, visitFamilySearch.org/pioneers or history.lds.org/overlandtravels.
