592. Some beautiful scriptures and quotes of Prophets. Great for a Sunday reading.

Here are a few spiritual thoughts for this beautiful Sabbath Day.  Today is our Ward Conference, and I'm sure we will hear some wonderful messages!  I will take notes and report on it later.

Happy Sabbath Day To You All!

The first quote is from Pres. Joseph Fielding Smith.  I remember him, and his wife Jessie Evans Smith, who had a beautiful contralto voice.  He wrote the words to the hymn "Does the journey seem long?"  I'll quote the first verse here, # 127 in the hymn book.

Does the journey seem long, The path rugged and steep?
Are there briars and thorns on the way:
Do sharp stones cut your feet As you struggle to rise
To the heights thru the heat of the day?

He knew many problems in his lifetime, with 2 different wives passing away and leaving him with many children.

Sacrament Shows Your Love for the Savior
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
1 Corinthians 11:24-25

"And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.  After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me."
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Joseph Fielding Smith

"The person who absents himself from a sacrament meeting week after week and month after month, and nothing prevents him from coming, is not loyal to the truth. He does not love it. If he did, he would be present to partake of these emblems-just a little piece of bread, a little cup of water. He would want to do that to show his love for the truth and his loyal service to the Son of God" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Fielding Smith, p. 96).

Acquisition of Spiritual Qualities
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
Galatians 5:22-25

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.  And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit."
David O. McKay
QUOTE OF THE DAY
David O. McKay

"Man's earthly existence is but a test as to whether he will concentrate his efforts, his mind, his soul, upon things which contribute to the comfort and gratification of his physical nature, or whether he will make as his life's pursuit the acquisition of spiritual qualities" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: David O. McKay, p. 14).

Holy Places
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
Doctrine & Covenants 45:32

"But my disciples shall stand in holy places, and shall not be moved; but among the wicked, men shall lift up their voices and curse God and die."
George Albert Smith
QUOTE OF THE DAY
George Albert Smith

"Conform your lives to the teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ and when calamities threaten you will feel the support of his all powerful arm. Make your homes the abiding place of the spirit of the Lord; let them be holy places, where the adversary cannot come; listen to the still small voice prompting you to works of righteousness" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: George Albert Smith, p. 262).

Keep the Commandments
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
Doctrine & Covenants 82:10

"I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise."

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Heber J. Grant

"It is not a testimony only; it is not marvelous manifestations; it is not knowing that the gospel of Jesus Christ is true, that it is the plan of salvation---it is not actually knowing that the Savior is the Redeemer, and that Joseph Smith was his prophet, that will save you and me; but it is the keeping of the commandments of God, living the life of a Latter-day Saint" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Heber J. Grant, p. 31).
