705. The poem “Good Timber” quoted by Pres. Monson at General Conference, and other good thoughts!

Good reasons for the trials we face, and conquer, in life!

These are good uplifting thoughts for the day!

The poem “Good Timber” quoted by Pres. Monson at General Conference

“Good Timber” by Douglas Malloch
Good Timber
by Douglas Malloch
The tree that never had to fight
For sun and sky and air and light,
But stood out in the open plain
And always got its share of rain,
Never became a forest king
But lived and died a scrubby thing.
The man who never had to toil
To gain and farm his patch of soil,
Who never had to win his share
Of sun and sky and light and air,
Never became a manly man
But lived and died as he began.
Good timber does not grow with ease:
The stronger wind, the stronger trees;
The further sky, the greater length;
The more the storm, the more the strength.
By sun and cold, by rain and snow,
In trees and men good timbers grow.
Where thickest lies the forest growth,
We find the patriarchs of both.
And they hold counsel with the stars
Whose broken branches show the scars
Of many winds and much of strife.
This is the common law of life.

Book of Mormon
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
 Moroni 8:35

"Behold, I speak unto you as if ye were present, and yet ye are not. But behold, Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me, and I know your doing."
Ezra Taft Benson
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Ezra Taft Benson

"In the Book of Mormon we find a pattern for preparing for the Second Coming. A major portion of the book centers on the few decades just prior to Christ's coming to America. By careful study of that time period, we can determine why some were destroyed in the terrible judgments that preceded His coming and what brought others to stand at the temple in the land of Bountiful and thrust their hands into the wounds of His hands and feet" ("The Book of Mormon---Keystone of Our Religion," Ensign,  November 1986).

Courage
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
 Psalms 27:14

"Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord."
Harold B. Lee
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Harold B. Lee

"The more complicated our lives and world conditions become, the more important it is for us to keep clear the purposes and principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is not the function of religion to answer all the questions about God's moral government of the universe, but to give one courage, through faith, to go on in the face of questions he never finds the answer to in his present status" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Harold B. Lee, p. 223).

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
 1 John 4:9-10

"In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Joseph Fielding Smith

"It is, however, within our grasp to know and realize that this excruciating agony of His sacrifice has brought to us the greatest blessing that could possibly be given. Moreover, we are able to realize that this extreme suffering---which was beyond the power of mortal man either to accomplish or endure---was undertaken because of the great love which the Father and the Son had for mankind" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Fielding Smith, p. 98-99).
