785. Thoughts for the Sabbath Day, from Latter Day Light, and my thoughts.

Today was Fast Sunday for our ward, inasmuch as the first Sunday was New Year's Day, and last Sunday was Stake Conference.  One sweet testimony today was given by a young father in our ward, who brought his baby girl, about 6 months, up with him.  He said that she had been coughing really constantly for a few days, and particularly badly in the night last night.  About 3 a.m. when she had been coughing so badly, he woke up suddenly, and felt he should give her a Priesthood blessing.  This he did, using the consecrated oil.  He felt impressed to bless her that her cough would go away and not come back.  She hadn't coughed once since that blessing.

It reminded me of several special Priesthood blessings that occurred in our home during the time we were raising our children.  One was our oldest son, Wayne Miles, who was only 3 weeks old, and hadn't been blessed officially.  He was crying, and in quite bad pain, and we had no idea what kind of pain he was having.  After a Priesthood blessing given by my father, and my husband Wayne, (as we were living with them that summer), he stopped crying so quickly that my sister in another part of the house came to see what had happened, as she had heard him crying a lot.

This is our oldest son, Wayne M., when he was about a year and a half.

I could mention other times, and I am sure you all have had them.  They are very sacred and a testimony that the true Priesthood is here on the earth!

Being Faithful
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
 Alma 37:33-34

"Preach unto them repentance, and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ; teach them to humble themselves and to be meek and lowly in heart; teach them to withstand every temptation of the devil, with their faith on the Lord Jesus Christ. Teach them to never be weary of good works, but to be meek and lowly in heart; for such shall find rest to their souls."

Brigham Young
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Brigham Young

"We talk about our trials and troubles here in this life; but suppose that you could see yourselves thousands and millions of years after you have proved faithful to your religion during the few short years in this time, and have obtained eternal salvation and a crown of glory in the presence of God? Then look back upon your lives here, and see the losses, crosses, and disappointments, the sorrows . . .

"Those things were but for a moment, and we are now here. We have been faithful during a few moments in our mortality, and now we enjoy eternal life and glory . . . enjoying the smiles and approbation of our Father and God, and of Jesus Christ our elder brother" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young, p. 178).

Jesus Christ
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
 Hebrews 5:8-9

"Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him."

Thomas S. Monson
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Thomas S. Monson

"Who was this Man of sorrows, acquainted with grief? Who is the King of glory, this Lord of hosts? He is our Master. He is our Savior. He is the Son of God. He is the Author of our Salvation. He beckons, 'Follow me.' He instructs, 'Go, and do thou likewise.' He pleads, 'Keep my commandments'." ("The Blessings of Obedience," Ensign, October 2016).

Love
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
 Matthew 22:36-40

"Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

Gordon B. Hinckley
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Gordon B. Hinckley

"This principle of love is the basic essence of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Without love of God and love of neighbor there is little else to commend the gospel to us as a way of life" ("And the Greatest of These Is Love," Ensign, March 1984).
