President Nelson Shares 9 Crucial Things Parents Should Teach Their Children

While traveling with President Russell M. Nelson throughout Canada, Elder Neil L. Andersen has been recording powerful teachings and insights he has learned from the prophet. During an address titled, “The Sacred Responsibility to Teach Our Children,” President Nelson shared crucial principles parents should focus on teaching their children:
"Tonight was another marvelous experience with the Canadian saints. Eight thousand members from the surrounding stakes of Toronto gathered in a large arena in Hamilton. The choir was exceptional, and President Nelson took time following the meeting to invite the children in the 80-person choir to come to the front and meet him. There was a powerful spirit of faith and appreciation for the special chance to have the Lord’s prophet among them.
"The Lord’s hand was once again strongly evident in the teachings of President Nelson. He walked to the pulpit without any notes. He began by expressing his love and appreciation for those in attendance. His attention riveted on the children and he titled his 45 minutes of counsel, 'The Sacred Responsibility to Teach Our Children.'
"Beyond the headlines that included teaching them what it means to be a child of God, and teaching them about God’s Only Begotten Son, here are a few of the morsels from the great banquet of divine principles:
1. Help them understand why we partake of the sacrament.
2. Especially fathers—read the scriptures to your children.
3. Let them have father’s blessings.
4. Prepare them for patriarchal blessings.
5. Teach them the significance of BIC (Born in the Covenant).
6. Show them how all things lead to the temple.
7. Help them to be honest in their tithing.
8. Warn them about the plague of pornography and how to spot and resist it.
9. Write each child or grandchild a letter, expressing your faith and love.
"The Spirit of the Lord confirmed the truth of what he taught, and as one teenage boy told me in Montreal, 'When the prophet spoke of how joy comes from keeping the commandments, I knew deep inside that it was true.'"

Life of a Latter-day Saint

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
1 John 2:3-6

"And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked."

QUOTE OF THE DAY
George Albert Smith

"I would like to say to the Latter-day Saints, if we are worthy to be called Latter-day Saints, it will be because we are living the lives of saints, and it is the purpose of the Gospel to qualify us in that way. The world has gotten into such a condition and has been deceived by the adversary for such a long time and has declared that the mere belief in God is all that is necessary, that I am fearful for it. That is only a trick of the adversary" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: George Albert Smith, p. 3).

SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY

Jacob 3:10

"Wherefore, ye shall remember your children, how that ye have grieved their hearts because of the example that ye have set before them; and also, remember that ye may, because of your filthiness, bring your children unto destruction, and their sins be heaped upon your heads at the last day."

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Heber J. Grant

"I am mentioning [this] in the hope that parents will realize that the example of integrity, of devotion, of loyalty to the Gospel, and the disposition not to find fault, but to labor diligently and unceasingly for the advancement of truth, is a marvelous heritage to leave to their children" (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Heber J. Grant, p. 207).
