William Chamberlain and his wife Mary Allen Chamberlain were the great grandparents of Gladys Tregenna Dayton Eckman.  Anne Chamberlain, mentioned below, became the wife of Hiram Miles Dayton, and was Gladys's grandmother.   Hiram's father's history is told about in blog # 67.  William Chamberlain was born 27th October, 1815, in Ewelme, Oxfordshire, England. He was married November 12, 1836 to Mary Allen, born 1 Jan 1815, also born in Oxfordshire, England . They spent the first part of their married life in England where Mary gave birth to John 1838; Henry, 1840; Elizabeth, 1842;  and Joseph in 1844, who died at 11 months of age.  They lived near Oxford, which has the oldest university in the English speaking world.  As the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is a unique and historic institution. There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096 and developed rapidly from 1167, when Henry II...

Latter Day Light DAILY DEVOTION __________________________ Parents Teachings and Example Nauvoo, Illinois November 21, 2013 SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY: Moses 6:57-59 "Wherefore teach it unto your children, that all men, everywhere, must repent, or they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God, for no unclean thing can dwell there, or dwell in his presence . . . Therefore I give unto you a commandment, to teach these things freely unto your children, saying: that by reason of transgression cometh the fall, which fall bringeth death . . . so ye must be born again into the kingdom of heaven, of water, and of the Spirit, and be cleansed by blood, even the blood of mine Only Begotten; that ye might be sanctified from all sin, and enjoy the words of eternal life in this world, and eternal life in the world to come, even immortal glory." QUOTE OF THE DAY:   Wilford Woodruff   "I...

I became interested in Family History when it was called "Genealogy".  I first became very fascinated with it when I was about 16 years old, (1950).  I had Aunt Sarah on my father's line, and my Aunt Vina on my  mothers' line who had both done quite a lot of genealogy.  I copied the large long family group sheets, and pedigree charts, and then went to our small library in St. George, and looked up names of my ancestors in New England in the few books they had.   I was thrilled to find names of direct ancestors in the early records in various states, especially Connecticut and Massachusetts. I had a few in New York, Vermont, and some other states also. but their Temple work was already done.  I have many who came in the early 1630's and 1640's.  One ancestor was the first white girl born in America, the daughter of French immigrants, I believe.  Another was the first person in New England to live to be 100 years old.  I have a 1640 map of N...

113. Levinah Emmaline Wilson, my mother Ruth's mother. Widow for 32 years.

Image
Levinah Emmaline Wilson , or “Emm” was born down on “The Muddy”, St. Thomas, Nevada, as it was called, on April 14, 1870.   It was covered now Lake Mead.    She was born in a dirt floored and dirt roofed house.  Her father had been called there to start a saw-mill.  She told the story, as it had been told to her, that at her birth it was raining,  (a rare thing for that section), and that sisters had to hold pans over the bed to catch the rain water, during her birth process.   Only the tops of a few trees used to show through the lake to show where the town had been.   It since is uncovered now due to the lake having less water.   Her father was George Deliverance Wilson, and her mother was Martha Ann Riste.   She was the 7th child out of eleven.  There were eight boys and three girls.  Aunt Martha was 10 years older than Mother and quite sickly.  Aunt Sadie was 8 years younger, so Levinah had brothers both younger and...

HOW MANY OF YOU KNOW, OR HAVE KNOWN YOUR GRANDPAS?  I NEVER KNEW MY OWN GRANDFATHER – MY MOTHER’S FATHER (OR MY FATHER’S FATHER AND MOTHER).  WHAT A BLESSING IF YOU KNOW THEM PERSONALLY.  I HAVE ENJOYED GETTING TO KNOW MY MOTHER’S FATHER BETTER THROUGH THE HISTORIES WRITTEN BY MY MOTHER, AND HER SISTER LA VERN – AND WHAT THEY WROTE .   Some following is what they wrote:  My mother Ruth’s father, John Butler Allen was born October 8, 1856, in Spanish Fork, Utah.  His parents were Philo Allen and Sarah Adeline Butler, who was his second wife.  Philo Allen and his first wife, Lucy, were some of the first settlers called to settle Spanish Fork, and while they were establishing dwelling places or homes, they lived in a dug out in the side of the mountain.  In this they were warm and comfortable while their cabin was being built.  Sarah Adeline was the daughter of John Lowe Butler, who was the first bishop in Spanish Fork, and when they were...
